How It Works
How shoe size systems work
There is no single universal formula that converts perfectly between all shoe sizing systems, because each system was developed independently with different starting points and increments. Conversions rely on standardized lookup tables based on foot length in centimeters.
CM (Mondopoint) is the most logical system: the size number is the foot length in centimeters. A size 28 shoe fits a 28 cm foot. The ISO standard (ISO 9407) recommends this system, and it is used in Japan, Korea, and for international athletic footwear.
US sizes are based on the Brannock scale. Men’s sizes start at size 1 for a 7 2/3 inch (19.47 cm) foot and increase by 1/3 inch per full size. Women’s sizes are offset by approximately 1.5 sizes from men’s (a women’s 8.5 is roughly equivalent to a men’s 7).
UK sizes follow a similar barleycorn system (1/3 inch per size) but start at a different point than US sizes. UK sizes are typically about 0.5 to 1 size smaller than US sizes for the same foot.
EU (European) sizes use the Paris point system, where each size is 2/3 cm (6.67 mm). EU sizes do not differ between men and women for the same foot length, though fit and width vary by shoe design.
