GPA Calculator

GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated by multiplying each course grade's point value by its credit hours, summing those products, and dividing by total credit hours. Enter your courses, grades, and credit hours to compute a weighted GPA.

Quick Answer

Four courses with grades A (4.0), B+ (3.3), A- (3.7), and B (3.0) at 3 credits each produce a weighted GPA of 3.50.

Common Examples

Input Result
A, B+, A-, B (all 3 credits) GPA: 3.50
A, A, B, C+ (3, 4, 3, 3 credits) GPA: 3.40
B+, B, B-, A (all 4 credits) GPA: 3.25
A, A, A, A (any credits) GPA: 4.00

How It Works

GPA = Sum of (Grade Points x Credit Hours) / Sum of Credit Hours

Each letter grade maps to a numeric value on the standard 4.0 scale:

Grade Points Grade Points
A 4.0 C 2.0
A- 3.7 C- 1.7
B+ 3.3 D+ 1.3
B 3.0 D 1.0
B- 2.7 D- 0.7
C+ 2.3 F 0.0

For example, if you earn an A (4.0) in a 4-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 3-credit course, the estimated GPA is (4.0 x 4 + 3.0 x 3) / (4 + 3) = 25.0 / 7 = 3.57.

Worked Example

For four 3-credit courses with grades A (4.0), B+ (3.3), A- (3.7), and B (3.0): Quality points = (4.0 × 3) + (3.3 × 3) + (3.7 × 3) + (3.0 × 3) = 12.0 + 9.9 + 11.1 + 9.0 = 42.0. Total credits = 12. GPA = 42.0 / 12 = 3.50. A GPA of 3.5 falls between a B+ and A- average.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is GPA calculated?
GPA is a weighted average of your grade points by credit hours. Each letter grade corresponds to a numeric value (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, etc.). Multiply each grade value by its credit hours, sum those products, and divide by total credit hours. The result is your estimated GPA on a 4.0 scale.
What is the 4.0 GPA scale?
The 4.0 scale is the standard grading system used by most US colleges and universities. An A equals 4.0 points, B equals 3.0, C equals 2.0, D equals 1.0, and F equals 0.0. Plus and minus modifiers adjust the value by 0.3 (e.g., B+ = 3.3, B- = 2.7).
Does this calculator support weighted GPAs?
This calculator uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale, which is the scale used by most colleges for admissions and academic standing. Weighted GPAs (which add extra points for honors or AP courses) use a 5.0 scale that varies by school, so there is no single standard formula for weighted GPA.
Can I calculate cumulative GPA?
Yes. Enter all courses from every semester you want to include. The calculator computes a single GPA across all entered courses, so adding courses from multiple semesters produces your estimated cumulative GPA.
